What is Nubian Moms?

Nubian Moms is a program that acts as a support system for ALL Black mothers across the Twin Cities metro in their pregnancies and beyond.

We strongly believe that this sacred journey is meant to be uplifted by the community. As members of that community Nubian Moms want to partner with mothers and families to plan for and create the pregnancy and birth experience they desire.

Unfortunately Black women have an increased chance of having negative  birth outcomes, so we need to hold each other up and protect our physical, mental and emotional health and the health of our growing babies from  the impact of  systemic racism and discrimination, in all its forms, wherever it is found! In service to the ultimate goal of promoting positive birth outcomes by being a bridge to prenatal and social services and social support.

We do that by building community together.  Nubian Moms foster relationships with our participants. As we believe in the ability to mitigate negative birth outcomes and experiences, comes from having the necessary support that all Black mothers deserve .  Too many Black women struggle with bringing life into this world safely and joyfully ; whether it’s the first or fifth pregnancy , the transition of bringing new life into the world is one of the biggest, hardest, transitions.

We welcome you to join us.

-Preterm Delivery is 49% (MDH) higher in the Black community, nationally, when compared to white pregnancies.  8.9% of Black births in Minnesota are premature (delivery before 37 weeks) (MDH).

Nubian Moms seeks to lower the odds of Black women experiencing preterm delivery by buffering the stress that Black women may experience during pregnancy and beyond. We do that by providing opportunities for connection and community.

-Low Birth Weight -  In Minnesota approximately 10.4% (MDH) of Black babies born are considered low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds).  That’s twice as much as white infants.

Nubian Moms encourages our participants to attend all prenatal visits- and we’ll help get you there if need be. A healthy lifestyle and attendance at prenatal appointments has beneficial effects for reducing the likelihood of having a low birth weight baby.

-Maternal Mortality (death of a birthing person within one year of birth)- Nationally, the United States has a maternal mortality rate of 27 deaths per 100,000 births, more than any other high-income country.  Black mothers in the United States have a 3-4x higher chance of dying from pregnancy related causes than white women.

Part of our work at Nubian Moms is to provide support and guidance with handling racism,  discrimination, or abuse in a medical setting.

-Infant Mortality (death of an infant within one year of birth)-  In Minnesota the infant death rate of Black babies is 8.1 per 1,000 (MDH), twice that of white infants.  Nationally it stands at 11.4 deaths per 1,000 (MDH) of all Black births.

Nubian Moms strives to provide the type of support Black mothers need to have healthy pregnancies.   Whether that means emotional support through connection with other moms, or practical support like obtaining healthy foods.

-Postpartum Depression- According to national data, 18.4% (CDC) of Black women experience postpartum depression.  Not only does ppd affect Black women more often, it is also often more intense.

Nubian Moms is here for moms for at least a year postpartum.  We can assist in finding resources for any mom experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns.  We try to build a community around every person, so mental health loads do not have to be born alone.
